There are very few things in Sicily powerful enough to make a person leave Catania on purpose.

Granita is one of them.

From 22–24 May 2026, the historic centre of Acireale turns into a sweet, icy little paradise for Nivarata – International Sicilian Granita Festival.

And yes, this is exactly what it sounds like: a whole festival dedicated to granita. Finally, humanity has its priorities in order.

Acireale is only about 20–25 minutes from Catania by car or train, which means this is not some grand expedition requiring hiking boots and emotional preparation.

It is an easy day trip, and a very dangerous one if you have no self-control around pistachio, almond, coffee, mulberry, lemon, or whatever genius new flavor someone decides to invent this year.

Nivarata is more than just β€œcome eat cold sweet things until your brain freezes.”

Though, let us be honest, that would already be enough.

The festival celebrates the old Sicilian tradition of the nivaroli β€” the snow gatherers who once collected snow from Mount Etna and stored it in caves so it could be used later to make icy desserts.

So yes, every spoonful of granita comes with a little bit of history. Which is lovely, because it gives you a classy excuse to order a second one.

Expect tastings, creative new flavors, demonstrations, contests, and plenty of proud Sicilian granita makers showing off their craft.

This is where tradition meets invention, and occasionally, where your breakfast turns into lunch because you keep saying, β€œOkay, just one more.”

Entry to the festival area is usually free, and you simply pay for what you eat.

Most granite and sweets should be around €3–€5 each, which is dangerously reasonable. That is how they get you. First it is lemon. Then pistachio. Then chocolate.

Then you are sitting on a bench wondering if three granite counts as dinner. It does. During Nivarata, it absolutely does.

So grab a friend, hop over to Acireale, and taste your way through one of Sicily’s most beloved traditions.

Catania is wonderful, of course.

But for one weekend in May, Acireale may be the coolest place to be β€” literally.
